The Last Rose of Shanghai by Weina Dai Randel
2.0

I liked the concept and plot of this story. A love story set in Shanghai during the Japanese Occupation between a refugee and an heiress is right up my alley. I was disappointed with the execution, there were spots in the plot I wished the author lingered and expanded on and others could be skipped over.

Ex: The 1980 framing device detracted from the story - I see why it was there at the end, but I wish it was just a linear timeline. But I wish we spent more time with them as they fell in love and the time of their reversal of fortunes.

I think if you are to take the plot of a Chinese historical melodrama I would like it to be in the writing style of one.
