Summerwater
by Sarah Moss
Set over the course of one very rainy day in a very rainy week, each chapter of this novel is a peek into the life of one of the guests at a cluster of vacation rental cabins by a loch in rural Scotland. Some characters venture outside, some stay in. They observe and judge each other. Astute and funny commentary on class, privilege and modern domestic life ….“getting married is like voting in that whatever you choose the outcome will be at best mildly unsatisfactory four years down the line.” None of the guests are happy to be there, in the rain, and a sense of foreboding throughout leads to a somewhat rushed ending. Although not my favourite Moss novel, (I preferred both Ghost Wall and Tidal Zone) I was into the voyeuristic narrative style, a good book curl up with on a rainy day. Also, I’m so looking forward to Sarah Moss’s next book, The Fell (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) March 2022.
