Hot Shot
by Staci Hart
I adore Staci Hart, both as a human and as a writer of contemporary romance. While I can recognize that this is a well-written story, it is, unfortunately, not one I enjoyed much.
This book was billed as a romcom. The setup at the end of the first book in the series tells readers we're going to get a second-chance romance between a couple who has been married for 10 years, the wife just doesn't know it. However, I felt blindsided by the trauma-heavy story that was delivered.
Spoilers ahead!
...
The first blindside hit came in the form of a surprise 6-year old daughter the hero didn't know about who resulted from a casual fling with a woman who just died in a fire. Readers now have a grieving 6-year old, a guy in utter shock, and a woman who just found out she's been married to this man for the past 10 years. Hit after hit keep coming as a lot of bad things keep happening to the three main characters, which led to the book feeling very trauma-heavy. This book was advertised with "no third act breakup!" don't worry, there's other trauma at around 75% that takes it's place.
I like this author a lot, but this book was not it for me. I have friends who loved it though!
