I picked this one up on a whim because I loved the cover art. Yes, I often judge books by their covers.
It worked in my favor here because this was super fun.
In an AU Victorian or Edwardian era, magical learning is reserved for those most dedicated to studying the practice. Our girl Ceony is very driven. She wants to bind herself to metal and become a metal-controlling magician, but there is a lack of paper-controlling magicians these days, so she's reassigned. Her new magical mentor shows her all sorts of wonders that can be performed using paper magic, and she falls in love with both the practice, and with him.
His evil ex has other plans, however, and Ceony, girlboss protagonist that she is, throws herself in the middle of an epic magical battle.
This book is fast-paced and the world building is super interesting. It's a nice mix of vintage/historical and modern/magical, and feels believable. I couldn't wait to snag the next few in the series.
