Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

This is actually more of a 4.5 star review for me, but I'm rounding up because I love how Leigh Bardugo writes and it brings the average score just that much closer to my ideal rating.

This book is the end of a trilogy and, in being so, it has to wrap up all the plot lines it creates. And it does so magnificently. While some things are left open, so as to allow the world to continue on, I think the way the story is resolved is a well crafted finale. Obviously, I'm not going to give it away, but I thought it was great. Others may not agree, but that's their opinion and they're entitled to it even if I think they're wrong. This whole story has been the tale of a hero, and I think it ends in a fitting way.

My only gripe continues to be the weird love corner at which Alina is the apex partner for three men, all of which she has feelings for in one way or another. The teen romance drama is not something I loved, honestly, in the second book and, while there was less of it in this book, there was still a reasonable dose of it here.

Overall, I definitely did prefer Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, which are the following two books that I accidentally read first. They're darker by far, but more my style and speed. You don't necessarily need to read the original trilogy first to enjoy them, BUT it definitely gives you more of an understanding of Ravkan politics during the Six of Crows duology.

Would I recommend reading this trilogy? Absolutely.
