In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

Machado's writing absolutely glitters in this book—powerful, bright, like light at the edge of a knife. This is an unflinching but compassionate memoir detailing the author's experiences within an abusive queer relationship. It is told through a series of snapshots, some more essaylike and others more memoirlike and still others much more experimental, that grapple with questions that stayed with me long after I closed this relatively short read. Perhaps the one that I am holding with me most clearly is that of queerness and villainy: what happens when wholehearted, cheap support has to turn on its head? We can be the monsters too. Powerful and challenging and golden. I will be reading this again.
