Definitely read the content warnings. Sexual assault, rape, incest, cannibalism…this is not for the faint of heart.

If you can get past that, the premise of this book is fascinating. As a lover of magic  (and the characters having similar names to me and my own family) I was instantly hooked. A family of witches that are immune to poison use their gift to rid the world of the men that prey on innocents.  Our main character, Piers, was once a vibrant person that was beaten down by her monster of her husband. We watch her fight to create a new life for herself, embrace her darkness, and challenge everything that tries to put her in a box. For a dark and serious book, there are moments of humor and romance. Most of the characters are endearing and easy to like.

My only critique is the exposition. The book is mostly propelled forward by monologues. We often get the same lore regurgitated by different characters. Contradictions are made and hastily covered up with more flashbacks and more tales. The pacing also feels a little off. Towards the end, all the plot lines converge back-to-back. It would have been nice to have it spread out more.
