On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
by Stephen King
Favorite Quote(s):
“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
“The scariest moment is always just before you start.”
“Writing is not life, but I think that sometimes it can be a way back to life.”
“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There's no way around these two things that I'm aware of, no shortcut.”
“If you intend to write as truthfully as you can, your days as a member of polite society are numbered.”
Review:
I was required to read this book as part of my Creative Writing class while in college. It was a class I was nervous to take primarily because I knew I would be required to share my writing which is something I just didn't do. I loved to write, but I was entirely certain that my words were not worth wasting the time of others. Anyways, the class ended up being one of the best ones I've ever taken and this book is the best thing I have ever been required to read. I have not personally read any of Stephen King's other books. Not because I think he is a bad writer, the story being told just wasn't one of particular interest to me and that's fine. His huge following and this book alone are enough to convince me that his writing is incredible and he absolutely knows what he is talking about. The way that he writes is magical, but so is the way that he talks about the art itself.
When I finished this book, I just wanted to read it again and again. I had it in ebook format and I wanted to go out buy a paperback version of it to carry with me at all times full of notes and highlights.
If you even remotely consider yourself a writer, pick up this book and do not stop until you have finished the last page.
