Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin
5.0

A friend suggested this for our buddy read this month because we both loved her first novel Ayesha At Last based loosely on Pride and Prejudice. This one is a modern, Canadian, Muslim retelling of You’ve Got Mail and it’s a delight.

Hana is trying to figure out who she is as a broadcaster and daughter of a restaurant owner. She’s got two relationships budding (like Kathleen Kelly does in You’ve Got Mail) with StanleyP and Aydin – she’s not intended for either of them to be long-term. But you don’t always know where life’s going to take you.

She does some sabotage, experiences some racism, and shares some beautiful insights into the Muslim faith that have become part of my own prayer to the Lord about answers to prayer, finding peace, and searching for meaning in the midst of trials. The writing is beautiful and the story is enough You’ve Got Mail to keep the movie in your mind, but not too much that every last detail is already laid out!
