The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle
3.0

The first half of this story was delightful. I loved the descriptions, the dialogue (particularly Marak's witty speech), and Kate's feisty personality. We journeyed with Kate up until she went to live in the goblin kingdom. Then suddenly we faced time-skips. A month, a year of cursory explanations of what happened, yanking us right out of the story. The supposedly most important part of the story, Kate's time underground, was brushed over.

The whole first half of the novel built up to it only to dismiss it when it arrived. It was wholly unbelievable. Kate spends the majority of her time being recalcitrant and despising Marak. I did not believe she'd fallen in love with him. I did not believe she "didn't mind his kisses." How in the fliggin world had she gotten to a point, after all that, where she wouldn't mind kissing him? When was their first kiss? And wow, just let me say. I realise this is in the vein of fairy tales, but the thought of Kate lying with Marak is amazingly unrealistic. She would fight him, and Marak wouldn't force her.

All in all, this was a bizarre mix between a proper story (that details the main character's journey) and a fairy tale (that leaves details out and time skips for hurried character development, etc, but usually this is necessary, considering the length of fairy tales). I was disappointed by the second half, but it was still a good read.
