Charmer by Kayley Loring

4.0

Kayley Loring has done it again, another sweet and sexy story about a single mother and a singer musician. You meet Nico in Sleeper, but you don’t have to have read that first to read Charmer. However, I was intrigued by his character and couldn’t wait to meet the girl who would knock him off his feet, and Kat was the perfect woman to do that.

Nico, a former child actor, turned charming singer songwriter who has a playboy past but having watched his sister settle down, he knows he’s ready to do that himself. When he meets Kat, a waitress at a late-night coffee shop and they strike up a flirty friendship, he can’t seem to get his mind off her and returns e very night to talk to her. Kat has her reservations at first, being a single mother with dreams of her own to be a film maker doesn’t want to set her and her son up for heartbreak by letting Nico into their lives. She knows he spends a lot of time touring, charming women every night and never making commitments to anyone. But when Nico offers her a job opportunity which would open up so many doors for her future, she jumps at the chance and the dynamic of their relationship changes. The attraction is still there but there has to be boundaries between them if they are going to be spending two months together, with her family too. But after a few weeks in close proximity, their chemistry becomes so palpable and they give into their attraction. The attraction turns to more, as they open up and get to know each other more, especially with the nature of Kat’s job. Will they be able to make it work in the long term, or will Nico’s job drag them a part before they’ve even started? Will Kat let down the walls she’s built up around herself to protect her and her son and let Nico into their lives fully?

These characters were all so likable. Kat was such an amazing mother; she didn’t jump in too quickly and fully considered her own career and family before she dived into anything other than a fling with Nico. By the end Nico had turned into such a swoon worthy hero, he knew what he wanted and didn’t stop until he had it. It only takes on person to make you want to change your ways, and Kat was that person for Nico. I loved how he didn’t just fall for her but Tate too. He considered Tate’s feelings and opinions, getting to know him, learning his likes and dislikes. He was there for Tate when he needed him and acted like a true father figure, which was incredible.

I enjoyed how there was minimal drama and angst, everything that happened was understandable from both sides, but they spoke about it like adults and there was no miscommunication, which I adored. The inclusion of Nico’s songs and Kat’s video diary was such a special touch, so different and refreshing!

Charmer was a light, easy and feel good read, which is perfect for reading when the world is crazy. Kayley’s quality writing offers the best escape as you join Nico and Kat on tour and watch them fall in love. I devoured this book in one day, it’s a must read!
