War of the Foxes by Richard Siken
dark
reflective
sad
slow-paced
4.75
Siken's Crush is possibly one of my all time favourite books, so picking this up felt necessary. While I didn't like it as much as Crush, I enjoyed it for other reasons. Crush was raw, violent, and emotive; War of the Foxes was softer, more reflective. If Crush is a scream in the middle of the forest, War of the Foxes is a whisper to your lover when you think they've already fallen asleep. I would recommend this to anyone who's a fan of Mary Oliver's poetry.
2025 Re-Read Review: this is a book that gets better with age. when I read this at 21, I didn't know what it was to feel a lot of the feelings that siken works with in this book. I couldn't have. As a full-blown adult, this resonates with me as much as crush did when i was young, desperate, and hopeless. Comparing this book to Crush is like trying to compare apples with foxes, it's pointless and unnecessary. I love this book and I'm so sorry for ever giving it less than the rating it truly deserves.
