Despite the label on here THIS IS NOT A MIDDLE GRADES BOOK. This book deals with really sensitive topics related to a boy's coming of age like, child abuse, mob mentality, the rights of an individual vs the common good. I think T. Kingfisher is often mislabeled because of her whimsical, glib writing and some of main her characters being under 18. However, the topics she deals with and the way in which she deals with them are definitely adult or young adult material.
That said, I started this book a bit uninterested in it. She has several books where the main character is an underwhelming mage who defies the odds and I thought it would be too repetitive to hold my attention. However, after the main character begins his quest , his inner turmoil about evil and good and all the points in between comes out and that's where the story really evolves into something interesting.
The main character Oliver, wrestles with finding ways to use his unique but small talents to save his community while trying to reconcile they're betrayal and sacrifice of him to the evil of the world.
Written with T. Kingfisher's signature sarcastic, self deprecating humor and unique characters, I ended up loving this novella.
