The Secret History by Donna Tartt

4.0

Okay, so I usually would like to wait to write a review but I’m so charged I must right down my thoughts. This book was very slow to start, but not in the same sense of a historical fiction but almost in a dream like state. The author is very unreliable, and it would make sense that the beginning of this book is almost too good to be true. The characters were not very interesting, they were all just snobby addicts with a lot of money. What was interesting was what they had gotten themselves into, and the author cleverly used these boring people to highlight how ridiculous the whole matter was. It was done in the sense where she didn’t want you to get attached to the characters, and honestly for good reason. None of them were likable, but again that’s totally the point. My only faults with the book are the way the women in the story are written and I didn’t really feel like any of the characters relationships, within the friend group, were fleshed out all that well. I didn’t understand why they were as close as they were; there bond felt very flimsy. The ending really sold it for me, I really like the way it ended it had me on the edge of my seat and even though I felt as though the ending was the only way for the story to truly end; I still found myself shocked. Good book.
