Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life
by Bryan Lee O’Malley
In this manga-style graphic novel, 23-year-old slacker Scott Pilgrim is enjoying hanging with friends, practicing in his band, and dating new girlfriend, high-schooler Knives Chau. But things start to change when a mysterious young woman starts roller-blading through Scott's dreams and then he sees her in real life. They begin to get to know each other and are attracted to each other. Then Scott starts getting letters from another man, saying he's preparing to fight Scott. Turns out that to date Ramona, the dream-skater, he has to fight her seven evil ex-boyfriends. Good thing that he, apparently, is an expert fighter!
This series has been getting really good professional reviews and they're making a movie out of it. All I can say is that they must get better as they go. This volume really just establishes the situation and the major players. Scott is a little bit like Joey from Friends, but not quite as lovable and charming. I'm imagining that, with a first name like Knives, the high-school girlfriend isn't just going to sit back and let Scott start dating Ramona, though that's not really established in this volume (though she is starting to go a little crazy). And what's the deal with Ramona and the evil ex-boyfriends? I just felt like things were explained enough to be confusing. I'll give the next couple volumes a try and see what happens.
