These were hard essays to get through, so I recommend reading them when you're in state of mind that can handle the dark truth behind them. The women illustrated in these short stories have complicated minds and in, many times, are put into hard situations. The essays I enjoyed the most are the ones in which Gay uses her metaphorical talents, such as a man who lives in a glass house with his glass wife and glass child. The stories represent how complex and beautiful women are. If you read them with a good outlook, you'll find that these stories are not sad or depressing, but powerful.
