Like the first book, the eccentric, genius investigator with a useful, beleaguered sidekick feels overly familiar. This setting feels less original, more classic fantasy, and less urgent than the first book (the threat of terrorism can't really match the kraken). This book also feels overly long.
Still, like the first book, although this doesn't feel innovative, it's fun and the mystery is complex and well-built.
