Ghostroots by ‘Pemi Aguda

dark emotional fast-paced

I thought this book was going to be spooky scary, but I found it to be   devastating. It cannot help that I read through most of it in one sitting.

After reading the first story, I was disappointed and almost did not read the rest of the book. I am glad that I picked it up again, because many of the other short stories were amazing and bordered the line of fantastical and real life.

I wish that some of the stories were omitted, because the other stories could have really shined and left a bigger impact. I related to a lot of the characters in terms of the fucked up mother/daughter relationships. That is what I found to be the most devastating and poignant.

All that said, I loved the prose style of the author. Sometimes I find authors try to make their language more flowery for effect when in reality it just comes off as silly. But Aguda’s style really achieves what many of those authors are aiming for. I hope to see more from her!
