Conjure Women by Afia Atakora
4.0

Afia writes beautifully. You can vividly see all that happens. I was spirited away to a time and place in history we need to remember better, but specifically through authors who have the voice to share it.
While there were many parts in the story that made me uncomfortable - that is because I’m a bit prudish on visualizing how babies are made. However, with that being said, I still read and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Following Rue from childhood to adulthood and back again - and then across the timelines of being a slave to a free woman - it was eye opening. And it wasn’t that long ago either.
I am excited to see what Afia writes next.
