Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
by Laura Hillenbrand
I started reading this book with a raging headache on 1/16/12 after being up all night the day before with both girls and the stomach flu. I didn't think much of the book in the first chapter or two, but then it got a hold on me and I plowed through it. I honestly don't know how I managed to read a 400 page book in a week, but I did. I checked the calendar a couple of times. The reasons are that the story is so gripping and the narrative is so seamless. It reminded me of the flow in "The Devil and the White City" in that parallel story lines were used and in the stark contrast between Louie and the Bird. No one could make up a story with more twists and surprises. If it weren't so well documented, I'd think it was a novel. This is one book that lived up to the hype and far exceeded my expectations. Now on to the next story…
