Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide by Georgia Hardstark, Karen Kilgariff
5.0
“Politeness doesn’t require actual humanity. It’s just cultural ritual...Politeness is fancy curtains in your front window. Kindness is the home-cooked meal on your dinner table.” - Karen Kilgariff
Stay Sexy Don’t Get Murdered written by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff, the hosts of the hit My Favorite Murder podcast, is a collection of personal essays all loosely structured around some of their famous catchphrases such as, “You’re in a cult. Call your dad.” This book reads less like a work of true crime, and more like a handwritten letter to all of the faithful murderinos at there. It is an honest look into the lives of two incredibly empowering, badass women who provide a gentle nudge to the readers to live their lives authentically, to not spend their precious time on this earth working hard to please others, to trust their intuitions, and most importantly to fuck politeness.
SSDGM was the self-help book I didn’t know I needed. I am so in awe of Georgia and Karen and their ability to bare their souls and be completely vulnerable. I ugly sobbed through quite a few chapters, especially the chapter where Karen discusses her late mother’s battle with alzheimers, and Georgia’s chapter on how Ray Bradbury saved her life and inspired her to get her nipple pierced. I am an incredibly anxious person, and I CONSTANTLY overwork myself to make others happy at the expense of my own mental health, and I desperately needed some words of tough love from two women I admire pretty vehemently. I am actively inspired to loosen my deadly grip around the vial that is politeness.
If you are a fan of the MMF podcast, and have not read SSDGM yet, I highly encourage you to check it out!
5 out of 5 stars.
My favorite quote was by Georgia saying, “Point being, you don’t have to bound into every situation ready to kick ass, you just have to show up, and once you’re there, you might as well do your best. But fuck it all if you think I’m not taking a nap afterward.”
