7/10 - Juno, our non-binary narrator interviews young trans people who share their experiences of questioning and exploring gender.
This is such an important topic. I think everyone should read it or listen to it. It’s uplifting, heartwarming, inspiring, and occasionally heartbreaking. But even at 190 pages, I feel it did get repetitive by the end.
I found the interviews with the fathers v mothers very interesting. When asked what advice they would given their past selves or others in the same situation, the father talked about minimising the effects from others in society, mothers were all about their own reaction and making their trans kids feel ok… it’s a small sample but I found it interesting.
”I believe that children who are questioning and exploring their gender, or simply making gender do what they need it to do, in order to lead happy, functional and aspirational lives, are the future of this planet. They are the gender explorers and gender bosses that we all so desperately need... I believe they are our future.”
“Is transgender misleading for young people when they are just being true to themselves?”
“They’re saying we can’t make decisions until we’re older, but I’m happy now.”
“He’d rather be bullied or picked on than not be himself.”
