Sweet & Bitter Magic
by Adrienne Tooley
"Moments were fleeting. So fragile. All Tamsin could do was hold onto the things that mattered and hope that was enough."
This book was fantastic. Everything about it was mystical, the plot, characters, and writing. This is a novel about love and not just in the romantic sense. So much of ya fiction leaves out familial love, but this book was bursting with it. Everything about the characters has been shaped by their love for their families and how they show it. Tamsin and Wren are some of the most realistic and relatable characters I've read about, not just because of how they love but because they are flawed and ridiculed by thoughts but are able to persist despite it. It's safe to say Wren has become a comfort character of mine.
There are quite a few tropes littered through out this, but they're all done so well. Just to list a couple there's enemies to lovers and the one bed trope. The romance is sweet and not overwhelming to the story. I loved how their relationship developed. There were definitely a few moments where I was frustrated at the lack on communication between the two, but it fit well with the characterization so I wouldn't say it was bad. In case anyone wasn't 100% by now, it is indeed a wlw, and it was done so well.
One of my absolutely favorite parts of Sweet and Bitter Magic was getting watching Tamsin's development. To refrain from spoilers I won't elaborate much but having almost tangible representations of her changes was heartwarming and made me so happy. I often had to put the book down and squeal internally just because of how much joy it gave me.
Overall, this book was a super great read. The world was built well, the character dynamics were fantastic, there was a good plot. By the end, I was so addicted to the story I may or may not have skipped the first half of a class to finish it. I have no words to accurately depict how wonderful this book was, but the closest I can get is that it felt like living through a fairytale.
Also, just a super quick side note both the map and the dedication are absolutely gorgeous.
