The Governess Game by Tessa Dare
3.5
The Governess Game by Tessa Dare is another fun and steamy historical romance in the Girl Meets Duke series.
I borrowed the audiobook from my local library and Mary Jane Wells continues to be an amazing narrator. I'm so sad that I slept on Tessa Dare for so long because she's quickly becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors. I have only read two of her books so far, but I've had such fun times with both of them.
In this installment we follow Alex, a former clock-setter who desperately needs this accidental governess gig to work, and Chase, an infamous rake who didn't expect to eventually inherit a dukedom from his ailing uncle. And the two young ladies he now has guardianship of are little spitfires.
This book is set a little bit after the end of the first. It was lovely to get updates on Emma and Ash, the leads of The Duchess Deal. There's a smidge of diversity in this book as Alex's mother was from the Philippines.
Overall I think I liked the first book better--this one didn't completely gel for me--but I still had a fun time! The pace felt really breakneck, so I wished it would have slowed down a bit and let us sit in the chemistry of the leads.
I especially loved Chase's wards, Rosamond and Daisy, they were really cute and precocious. The younger girl puts on daily funerals for her doll, Millicent, and they were amazing. The banter between Chase and Alex is pretty great, but I think I liked her as a character better than I liked him as a character. He was a little lackluster.
I'll definitely be reading more from this author, and I'm very excited to continue on with this series because Penny's book is next.
