It was a sweet, moving tale for children and adults alike. Johannes is a dog who was born in a nature park. The bison are the keepers of wisdom and balance, and Johannes reports what he sees to them as their eyes. But then one day, new happenings come to the park, which culminates in an impossible task.
I listened to the audiobook, which Ethan Hawke narrates, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I loved Johannes, smart and fast dog, and I love how self-confident he is. I love how his world and understanding grows throughout the book. And, really, I loved all the animals. Very cute and heartwarming and inspiring.
Favorite quotes:
“I thought about the strangeness of salvation. I hadsaved the girl , and now I was a hostage in my own home. If I had allowed her to sink, or simply had watched and waited for someone else to save her , I would still be free. I would be able to run free, and [everything] would probably be fine…. helping brought an unseen burden…The invisible are free.”
“God is the Sun. Clouds are her messengers. Rain is only rain.”
“Heroes go forth. To be alive is to go forth. So we went forth.”
