I wanted to love this… and in the last 100 pages it was getting there but this is not going to surpass any of my favourites any times soon.
The first in a new fantasy series, this book has a serious information dump and, for me, the world building was stretched out too much.
I was expecting Celine to be a bit more strong willed, but she basically spent the whole book not questioning what she was being told and just going along with things. Also, she didn’t read like a 23 year old to me… I think if I didn’t know her age going in I would have assumed she was 17/18.
There were two narrators for this tale both as unreliable as each other and as I result I struggled to connect with them or care about their fate. I think I would have preferred to have only one side of the story as I don’t feel that having Magali’s narrative added much, though from the end it would suggest that in the sequel this might work better.
Overall this fell a bit flat, and while an interesting premise it just didn’t grab me in the way that other fantasy books have. I will probably read the next book because I am intrigued to see where the story will go, but the best word I can use to sum this up is ‘meh’
