Young Avengers, Volume 1: Style > Substance by Kieron Gillen
5.0
I've been a fan of the Young Avengers for a long time now. Just the concept appealed to me and the fact that they had a gay couple was a big draw for me. This volume totally delivers.
The book is pretty beautiful with great character designs and layouts. I remember the last couple times I saw a Young Avengers issue, the art was really not my style.
The story arc is a bit convoluted, but still good. Kid Loki makes everything more interesting, but having not read his arc in Journey Into Mystery, I found myself a bit confused by him. There's also clearly some history with Miss America and Noh-Varr, but they got very little exposition. For that matter, none of the characters did, really. Having read three of the other main YA stories, this wasn't an issue for me, but could be for new readers.
Other than that, I thought it was a really interesting and solid way to bring this team together. I loved seeing that Billy, Teddy, and Kate are still friends. I hated watching Kid Loki mess with them. I want to like Miss America and Noh-Varr, but don't want them replacing Patriot and Iron Lad or any of the other team members lost along the way. My point is that I care about this team and all of it's working parts at the end if the day, that's what sells me on a book.
