Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
4.0

Had this been set in the 1800s U.S., it would have made a fine western novel. You have the shifty landlord of the inn, who is tied up in a ship wrecking racketeer. There's the horse thieving love interest. The damsel in distress, who happens to be the landlord's wife, and the I-ain't-skurred-of-nuthin' girl, who is the niece of said wife. There's drinking and rabble-rousing and murders and anything else you'd expect in a western, but it's set in southwestern England!
