Charlie Bone and the Hidden King by Jenny Nimmo

During winter break, the Bloors receive help which pushes them towards their goals of gaining power and being the strongest among the endowed. Unbeknownst to Charlie, this help turns out to be the one thing that’s prevented him from communicating with the Red King in his portrait. The shadow. What he and his don’t now though is that they are going to be facing the most powerful dangers they have yet to encounter and it’s not afraid to go after those not endowed. It’s going to take every last one of the children of the Red King to defeat this evil if only they can unite to do so.

I appreciated that this book focused more on how the battles being fought among the endowed don’t just stay there. These dangers spread out and impact those who aren’t of the Red King and Charlie starts to fully learn the consequences of his actions. I also really liked that this book expanded upon the general world of the endowed. Lastly, my favorite part was probably seeing more the other children using their powers and how Charlie can’t always be the solution to the problems at had. The end was great and I’m interested to see how it will influence the coming books.
