The Firm by John Grisham

4.0

I completely enjoyed this. The story picked up pace right from the get go. There were absolutely no slowing parts. Most times, it was hard to stop reading and get on with the rest of my day. That for me is what makes this a five star.

But, a couple of things I couldn’t understand so will have to give it a four.

1. How was Mitch able to shake off tails with so much ease. True, many a time he wasn’t able to, but several different times he did succeed and sort of became an expert. How can a person with no experience of tailing people/shaking off tails with little to no professional practice beat people who have been doing it as a career for a while. That part I don’t fully get. There were parts to this aspect of the story where he had to run past down alleyways and shops where his excellent physique did get used as a sort of indirect explanation. But nevertheless I’m not fully convinced.
2. How did he manage to remain in excellent shape after he joined The Firm. There was practically no mention of him
hitting the gym after joining the Firm.
3. The Firm was just stupid. How did they allow him to run out of the law office after they got confirmation that he was an informant? That was just completely reckless and stupid.
4. How did the boat, in the end, cross into the Cayman Islands without passing any port authority or the US Coast? Plus, with the FBI manhunt, if the mob could figure out that Mitch would eventually escape through the seas, why couldn't the FBI do the same. I thought there would be patrols (might have to read up more on this as my knowledge in this respect is fairly basic)
5. If the FBI had an inkling that their senior man was bent and a suspicion that he gave up Mitch, why did they allow him to go through with it. I get that they needed proof to bust him. But, at the same time, they gambled big. In the end, they got both the proof of their bent insider and enough to make their case against the firm so I guess the point is sort of moot but a big gamble nonetheless.
6. How did Tammy go from a secretary smoking like a chimney to seducing and drugging a lawyer and stealing documents and making untraceable calls to the FBI and playing various other spy like roles without even a single slip up. Seems like all the characters were born with some kind of special spy like instincts and needed no formal training even though it takes years for a person to reach such a stage.
