This book takes traditional ideas of magic and turns them around. Magic isn’t something that people can use freely whenever they want, there’s a price for using it, an expensive one at that. And in a book where money and the disparity between those that have it is so prevalent, the concept of payment for magic just fit so well.

I greatly enjoyed this book and it’s fictionalized look into French court and the upheaval of the French Revolution. The pacing was, at times, a bit slow and I struggled to move through certain sections of the book. But overall I enjoyed the themes on wealth, movement up the social ladder, and all the negative things that come with each one of them. I also enjoyed the message of hope and freedom. I’m excited to see what the author does with the second book.
