Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

3.0

Engaging and well-written, but ultimately too frustrating for me to give it higher stars.

My primary issue is with how fucking stupid everyone was in this volume, to the point where it felt constructed by Hobb to place Fitz at absolute rock bottom. After Regal's treason at the end of book one, we're expected to sit back as every single character does fuck all to ensure he isn't attempting to steal the crown again. Not assassinating the dude in retaliation is one thing, but failing to adequately anticipate future treachery, or even investigate the motives of Galen's (literally executed for trying to kill Verity) coterie, is just inanely unbelievable considering the people involved.

Also, I'm sorry, but I just don't like Molly at all. Get some fucking brains, baby, not everything revolves around your small-minded concept of honor. The fact that she's almost certainly going to have Fitz's baby is infuriating, ugh. I'd sooner see him with Celerity any day.

Like I said, Hobb knows how to write, and she certainly dragged me through to the end despite grinding her readers down alongside Fitz. Standard midpoint of the hero's journey, but I didn't relish the experience for all that it was well done.
