Mary has lived in a small village surrounded by a fence and the Unconsecrated her whole life. Always she has turned her attention beyond the fence and wondered about the ocean, something her mother told her about from a picture.
But the Unconsecrated make exploring impossible. They are the dead, forever driven to find humans and spread the infection.
One night, the Unconsecrated break through the village's defenses and Mary, her brother, and her friends must leave their world and enter the Forest of Hands and Teeth to survive.
This story reminded me of the movie The Village, only there really is danger beyond the perimeter. There's not real happy ending either as everyone fights for their own survival.
