Before I handed it to my friend at work I said "Let me star the essential ones" and ended up with markings next to 2/3 of the contents. Given that I'd never read Sullivan before I picked up Pulphead and have no particular fascination with southern culture, that's a good showing indeed.
If you want an analogy to other essayists, I'd say that Pulphead is one part Klosterman (the subject matter) and one part DFW (same cerebral, slow reveal), but with a little less ego involved. There's no outrage here -- just curiosity, and a lot of sympathetic portraits of characters Sullivan has come to know.
