Fox by Joyce Carol Oates
3.5
dark slow-paced

I have finally finished Fox!

The premise of this book put it onto my radar immediately, despite being unfamiliar with Joyce Carol Oates’ wide array of work.

Fox begins with the body of local middle school teacher Francis Fox found in a local ravine, seemingly ending up there by suicide. But as we discover move about Francis Fox throughout the book, we realise exactly why and how he ended up there.

I do like a thriller with a twist; for a book of this length (over 650 pages) and plethora of characters, I was expecting to be left guessing throughout. My expectation was that I’d have no idea what was going to happen right until the end, suspecting each and every one of our characters, however I’m sad to say that was not my experience.

To me, the plot was clear-cut from the start and what seemed to be too obvious was essentially what did happen. Slightly disappointing after committing over a week to this book.

However, what saved this book for me was the way the characters were written - everyone was so completely believable and real and complex. The thoughts and flaws of the characters were so believable and Francis Fox is the most villainous character I have ever read.

There are many, many dark themes in this book that are unfortunately all too real and parts of the book and Mr Fox’s actions are very hard to read, so be warned. This book made me feel anger, disgust, shock, and although not everyone wants to be made to feel that way, that is what has kept the rating of Fox high despite its predictability.

Mr Fox is not a character I will forget any time soon.
