Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
Did not finish book. Stopped at 70%.
There is little to no plot. The writing is TERRIBLE and so much is repeated and fed to the reader that there is no imagination in the story. Every little detail is fed and TOLD to you. Theres no inferring or description as to why/ how we know things. Its just plainly stated. The main character is “pick me” and has no character development. She makes the worst decisions and is borderline stupid, where she forgets things that she’s been warned about, and then makes the same mistakes over and over and over and over again. She reads as a 14 year old. I think shes 17… and I know by the end of the series her and the MMC end up together, but there is no chemistry between them, there’s not even an ounce of anything that would lead me to want these two together. One is an idiotic child. One is a manipulative, liar that they even referred to as predatory multiple times, and because he’s a Fate….. He is centuries old…. Can we stop justifying that love trope. 🤮🤮🤮🤮
The main character could literally be swapped out with any single human on the planet because nothing she does is important. There is one sentence in the book where the author even acknowledges it. And I don’t know if the book is being self-aware, or if it’s that bad..
“Everyone was friendly in an I’m only talking to you because someone else made you look important sort of way”
That’s the whole book. She never becomes important…. It’s always because someone else made her important. Everything she does is for a boy. Every action is because she’s thinking of a boy.. She never takes responsibility for her action. She always says it’s because of a boy, or because a boy did something… she has no character of her own. Aside from being a stupid boy, obsessed pick me.
Other notable sentences are: she had no idea how MMC was at this event because it was a rather exclusive event. Everybody got to meet with the prince that night, so it wasn’t exclusive at all. It was literally opened to everybody….
Bad book. Bad writing. Bad / boring one sided characters. No thanks. I gave it a good shot.
I’m mad that I read that much of it though. Lol. Sorry to the author, and sorry to anybody who this is their favorite book.
