Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
4.0

Knowing that this is the story that really happened, and happened to many over and over, makes it all the more heart wrenching. Usually I don't go for narratives, especially from this time period, because I cant keep my interest up through it, but this was an interesting and captivating read ll the way (with the exception of the description of the cotton and sugar manufacturing).
This is the first book about slavery I have read. Not being an American, I have never been particularly invested in the subject. But this was a good introduction. I may look up other stories like this to further my education on the subject.
