Daddy Was a Number Runner by Louise Meriwether

5.0

What a read. Told from Francie's (an adolescent Black girl growing up in 1930's Harlem with her two older brothers, mother and father) pov... I felt like I could have been reading a book set in present day.
Francie is somewhat naive, given everything that's going around her . But, her voice is still full of wonder, resignation, and hope . Which is refreshing considering the racism, harassment, molestation, oppression and sexism she faces a daily bases.
I love reading about Harlem during this time and this didn't disappoint.
The woman that wrote it [ai:Louise Meriwether|174707|Louise Meriwether|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1416025073p2/174707.jpg] is also pretty iconic.
