I don't know why I put off reading Kingfisher. I've had What Moves the Dead languishing at the bottom of a pile for months. I've been disappointed by modern horror writers a bit recently, so maybe that was it, but I did her such a disservice.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Sam is a wonderful protagonist. I can even see how she might irritate some people, like a real person might. Her voice is warm and witty but still responds realistically when the monsters start crawling in through the windows. A quote on the back of this book described it as 'charming' and I absolutely agree with that description. Despite the gentle welcome of the characters I still found the supernatural elements genuinely intriguing. I think I'm going to be reading a lot more Kingfisher in the future.
