This was an adorable (and queer!) take on magical realism. I appreciated the Asian and disability representation presented.
I liked that the story was familiar in some ways and unique in others. Nova is a typical magic apprentice living with her grandmothers, but being able tosee her departed parents in ghost form during holidays was so sweet and genuinely funny.
Tam being a werewolfand a source of magic was a neat twist. I do wish the book could have explored more of the role of magic within this world. We know that Tatianna, a mundane, is aware of magic, and that a council exists, but not many details about the rules of magic. Maybe we'll get a sequel? I would certainly read this again.
