klwest21 's review for:
The Other Alcott
by Elise Hooper
This book focuses a great deal on an imagined version of what life was like for May Alcott to live in her sister, Louisa's shadow. I might have missed something since I haven't read Little Women before, but instead it makes me think, I ought to tackle that one.
Things I enjoyed:
1) That the book heralds international travel for young women,
2) That the women in the book have pursuits aside from pursuing men at the time
3) That they interweave other famous women artists of the time.
4) Following two ladies who followed their artistic spirits
Things I was less keen on:
1) The reader--I listened to this as an audiobook for my book club and the voices in particular left me a bit wanting
2) I wish that the letters would have been more integrated in to the book--especially May's journal to Louisa that was uncovered at the end. I would have loved to have read those letters.
3) The abrupt turn of the last few chapters. It felt a bit hurried and jarring.
4) Especially how some of the language was portrayed by the reader I listened to was a bit awkward and felt kind of clunky instead of whisking me away into the period in which the book was set.
