I am still thinking about this book to this day. The unimaginable tragedy of war, the complexity of human emotion and relationships, the journey of motherhood and loss. Finding your partner again amongst the most painful chapters of life and coming back stronger. I CANT EVEN PUT IT INTO WORDS.

The themes of loss are so powerful in this book. It’s absolutely visceral. M. L. Wang delivers again on hard subjects like political propaganda and politics, justice, and loss. The characters are flawed in human ways while being the most powerful humans imaginable.

Misaki was one of my favorite characters, probably ever. She has the most interesting growth and personality I’ve read in a long time. The relationships around her are so dynamic and interesting it’s just such a beautiful story even with the fantastical power system.
