Bitter by Akwaeke Emezi

Like its sequel, BITTER is a tad didactic, but I suppose that makes sense since the target audience is young. And while Emezi's characters are straightforward about their politics, they retain complexity and rawness that made this novel a page-turner for me, even though I am well into my 20s and not a typical YA reader anymore.

Now I want to reread PET-- I wonder how this context would alter the reading experience. Emezi succeeded in writing two books in dialogue with each other (rather than being in complete agreement). I was just talking with a friend about the difference between PARABLE OF THE SOWER and PARABLE OF THE TALENTS and that's the closest analogy I can find here.

PET is a thought-provoking book series and I can only be jealous of the young readers who gain exposure to radical politics and abolitionism through these stories.
