The double-page spreads between Sidman’s engaging short poetry and nonfiction paragraphs of information about nocturnal animals pair well with Rick Allen’s illustrations, as the combination of three elements makes each spread feel dynamic and allows for discussion as young readers look for each of the references in the nonfiction to be found first in Allen’s art and then in the accompanying poem. Each of Sidman’s poems takes on a slightly different voice, indicative of the different creature “speaking,” which adds to both the entertainment and craft value of the book. Unlike Coral Reefs (above, #66) I can see this being a very successful “lap book” or “classroom book,” because Sidman’s language is both informative and digestible.
