let's just say that i was completely surprised when the first half of the book focused on the experiences of a newborn alien-human hybrid that could talk! i will admit that i was slightly disappointed when the protagonist of this book was not lilith, but within the beginning few chapters, i was glad it was following her son, akin. lesson learned-- have faith in octavia butler! trust the process!
adulthood rites felt like a natural progression from dawn. it includes both new and old characters that expanded on their preexisting characterizations and the overall series universe, especially with the oankali which had limited personalities in dawn. i absolutely love the worldbuilding in this book. it was so fascinating to read about lo and how the humans and oankali coexist vs the resister human colonies and their plights. through the protagonist, akin, butler once again does an excellent job of showing both sides of the same coin. exploring the duality of akin, a male human-alien hybrid child, it sheds more light on the inner workings of these aliens and human societies and what they find important and what they find flawed, both within themselves and the other group. i'm excited to read the final book in the trilogy and see if it stacks up to the others!
