Five Decembers
by James Kestrel
A classic case of “don’t judge a book by its cover” with this one. Five months and 30 books later, this is still my favorite story I’ve read in 2023. Much deeper and more complex than the genre might lead you to believe, this story has a bit of everything. More than just a noir mystery novel, this incredibly well-paced story will put you through the ringer and leave you wishing every story could make you feel as much. My only gripe is that I wish it were more easily forgettable so that I could experience it for the first time all over again.
