bolynne 's review for:
The Practitioner
by Ronica Black
Stayed up way too late and read it in one sitting. God, I needed this book in my life so badly. Full review to come after I calm down and sleep.

Okay! Time to write this thing! I'm all calm now ready to go.
****I received this ARC from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books in exchange for an honest review!****
Any time I read a book revolving around a romance, the main thing is for it to be meaningful, realistic, and make me FEEL something. This book checked all those boxes for me over and over.
I need to get my hands on some other Ronica Black books if this is how she writes her characters on the regular. Johnnie was so easy to relate to and I could feel the waves of emotion that she was dealing with so deeply, honestly reminding me of those times in Charmed where Prue and then Phoebe became empaths. It can be debilitating constantly being plugged in to everyone's emotions around you, and Black transcribed it so well. It pushed the 'sensitive painter' trope to a whole new level.
Elaine's journey through dealing with grief was also incredibly inspired. It isn't easy to move on after loss of that magnitude and I enjoyed (I know it sounds sadistic) watching her struggle to reconcile that you can love again and it isn't a betrayal to who you've lost.
The only frustrating part were the two women on the side. I know there has to be some other obstacles between the main couple, but damn I don't think I've wanted to smack someone so hard as I wanted to smack Gail. I commend Black for making such a realistically disgusting human being, but damn.
Obviously the sex scenes were 100% on point and showcased something so deep and pure for this couple. Just read it.
Seriously. Read it.
