This Book Will Change Your Mind About Mental Health by Nathan Filer

5.0

A very well put-together piece of writing about schizophrenia, from the perspective of a psychiatric nurse. This describes clearly what the medical profession knows and doesn't know about schizophrenia, what treatments are available and how well they work and our (sometimes limited) understanding of how they work. Filer is honest about how much of our treatment of mental illness is based on educated guesswork, and how some of it is not based in research at all but in professional experience and instinct. He writes sympathetically (but without condescension) of the schizophrenic patients he encountered. As someone with a close family member who is living (well) with this illness, I was impressed by this.
