What Happened To You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Bruce D. Perry, Oprah Winfrey

4.0

Dr. Perry knows his stuff. This book is easy to read in its format as a dialogue between the world's beloved Oprah and Dr. Perry. I was skeptical of the Oprah angle, but as I read, I truly appreciated the context her life story and questions contributed to the narrative on whole-self healing.

Dr. Perry explains the neuroscience of trauma, the impact of improper care on infant and child development, and the components of what it takes to heal in an easy-to-understand way, with lots of visualizations and illustrative stories. This is definitely a good one for establishing a core understanding of what trauma is and what to do with it, and how to shift our cultural perspective from "what's wrong with you/me" to "what happened to you/me" — not to remove responsibility from the self, but to create clarity and understanding for the self that helps us be able to take meaningful action.

Highly recommend.

(But with the caveat that the more you know, the more you realize how poorly positioned our current culture is to nurture children into emotionally healthy, empathetic adults and to help broken adults find the healing they need.)
