War by Laura Thalassa
3.0
Okay, so in spite of all good sense I am giving this book three stars. It the writing better than Pestilence? God yes. Is it GOOD writing? I would not go that far.
I’ll say basically what I said last time, this author has some legitimately interesting ideas. There were actually some flickers of deep moments and world building. Flickers of character development that made me want to know more. However, where she loses me is her dialogue. War says the word “wife” so many times I started reading it in the Borat voice.
The Mary Sue has pretty much the exact same voice as the previous one with the most jarring slang and profanity thrown in that took me out of the moment every single time. Like your main character is half Jewish and speaks Hebrew, there’s a wealth of vocabulary you could have brought from that instead of saying “holy balls” a dozen times and good god why are we still saying “boobs” constantly.
There were portions where I was like okay this is actually not bad and I’m gaining interest and then it just starts feeling, I don’t know, lazy?
The smut is somewhat better written in this one but I still find myself generally unimpressed by the Mary Sue and unconvinced that she is somehow supposed to be irresistible.
But I obviously hate myself so yes I will read he next book. SIGH
